Hong Kong University Launches Metaverse Postgraduate Programme

The city's first Metaverse postgraduate program, "Master of Science in Metaverse Technology," was created by Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has started the city's first postgraduate Metaverse program. According to the PolyU website, the "Master of Science in Metaverse Technology" program will commence in September 2023.

According to the course outline, the program's goal is to teach students about the nature of Metaverses as well as the underlying technologies for creating Metaverses.

The curriculum will be taught through the engineering faculty's computing department and will last a year. Among other things, students will learn how to "pursue careers in start-ups and big players in the Metaverse industry," according to PolyU's website.

The Metaverse is a 3D virtual realm where individuals may connect with one another through games, virtual concerts, and other experiential activities. Following Facebook's renaming to "Meta Platforms," the booming business has been one of the hottest topics in the last year.

According to recent projections, the Metaverse might be valued at trillions of dollars by 2030. This has sparked an insatiable demand from the general public, with prominent technology firms eager to seize the opportunity.

Hong Kong PolyU is one of many universities to start a Metaverse curriculum. Universities in the city have expanded their programs in an effort to keep students from going abroad.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) launched the Web3 Carnival in September, a series of online talks concerning the sector that will take place in November.

Despite the lack of a precise definition, web3 supporters characterize it as the next generation of the internet, built on decentralized ledger technology to democratize the web. The growing use of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and decentralized apps is driving its popularity.

Ankara University became Turkey's first higher education institution to offer a course on NFTs in February. The University of Tokyo's engineering department established study programs in the Metaverse in July.

The University of Houston started its Metaverse campaign earlier this month in collaboration with the AI Innovation Consortium, Nvidia, and TechnipFMC. It is one of the university's efforts to participate in the industrial Metaverse. Draper University and CEEK VR collaborated later in the month to establish a Metaverse and VR hacker home.
